In general, when one thinks of 3D printing applications, one envisions a variety of things.

The picture that comes to mind is one of basic, single-colored plastic models — toys and experiments meant for entertainment purposes alone. 

3D printing organs and other medical uses on the opposite end of the spectrum are being researched.

However, this technique has several additional possible applications, one of which is textile design.

3d Printing Textiles As A New Path:

When it comes to textiles, the 3D printing business is very new and very much in the experimental phase.

Cotton and other natural fabrics can be difficult to print, so 3D printed clothing often uses other materials, such as plastic. 

Bulky and stiff, they are more appropriate for a runway show than daily wear.

As a result, the 3D printing industry has shifted its attention to fashion items like jewelry and eyeglasses. Textile-like pliability isn’t required for these items.

Insoles are one possible use for this technology in the garment business.

Start-ups such as Wiivv Wearables, a Canadian company, and the New York-based Feetz employs 3D scanning technology to build an exact model of the customer’s feet, which is then used to manufacture a bespoke insole. 

As a result, customers will be able to purchase insoles at a lower cost. Aside from insoles, Wiivv plans to apply this technology in garments in the future as well.

The goal is to lower the price of custom-made apparel so that more people may afford it.

Material: Natural Or Synthetic?

A number of other firms are now working on making this notion a reality, although the outcomes are uneven.

Earlier this year, Electroloom successfully crowdfunded a 3D printer for apparel as part of a Kickstarter campaign.

In comparison to previous 3D textile designs, these outfits are significantly more wearable and practical.

Spraying a solution containing the fabric mix into a mold, where it would turn the fabric hard, to manufacture biological tissue. Producing a single item of clothes requires anything from 8 to 14 hours.

Eletroloom was to shut shop last year, despite a promising Kickstarter campaign.

In the absence of more finance, the company could not continue developing and improving its prototype.

This high-risk project was moving slowly, and there didn’t seem to be much desire in continuing it.

The firm has shown promise despite this poor conclusion, and maybe others will take up this initiative in the future and develop it further.

There is also a UK university that is focusing on making 3D fabric that is more flexible and wearable than current versions.

They name their collection Modeclix, which is constructed from 3D printed fabrics that are then colored, woven, and crocheted into garments.

The fabric is supple and drapes in a manner that is akin to that of more conventional attire.

Despite the fact that they are currently only prototypes, 3D printing textile design has the potential to become more practical in the near future.

The institution is now hoping to produce these prototypes for a broader market after their success.

What Is Soft Physics About?

Visually realistic models of readily deformable materials are the subject of the computer graphics discipline is “soft physics”.

Gels and textiles, for example, retain their form after usage, but draping, gathering, bunching, and the like will alter their appearance while wearing.
