Before you employ a home tutor for your child, there are a few things to think about

Here are a few things to bear in mind if you’re thinking about hiring a tutor:

As a former high school math teacher, the current Ph.D. candidate in math education, and an experienced home tutor in math, science, and humanities for students from kindergarten to university level, I give these recommendations.

Determine your objective

When all you want to do is pass a test, a class, or get some other short-term result and be done with it, you’ve set a performance objective. A learning aim, on the other hand, is to truly comprehend an idea and be able to apply it to many situations.

While parents may want their children to attain both academic and athletic goals, learning should always come first. Learning will lead to improved performance, but this will take time.

Take note of the tutor’s activities.

A good tutoring session entails more than just the home tutor instructing the student. Students should be actively participating in the tutoring process rather than simply sitting silently while the tutor speaks.

When a home tutor is working with a student, there are a few things to keep an eye out for:

It’s preferable if there are follow-up questions, because students may draw conclusions that help them get correct answers on one sort of problem but lead to errors on another.

At home, do things on your own

If your child has trouble reading, read to him or her, with him or her, and in front of him or her. Whether you have small or older children, this is true. Allow them to observe you reading books, magazines, and the internet. Encourage a love of reading and a sense that reading is a common occurrence in your home.

If your child has trouble with English or writing, you can help them by speaking to them in a variety of words, including those they haven’t heard before.
