Arts and craft have been on the surge during the pandemic. Parents and kids stuck indoors didn’t have much to do. As a mother, I put on my invisible cape and learned crafting to be able to bond with my kids and keep them engaged during all this free time. Of course, all have Cox internet cable but you can’t make your kids watch cable all day, right?
Did you know, that people have been turning to craft during turmoil for a long time? Since World War Two, craft has been connected to wars in several ways. Even the federal government and several non-governmental organizations engaged in a therapeutic craft for veterans and troops. Individuals and families used to find solace in crafts because it helped them express their inner-self, communicate, occupy the mind and body, promote political activism, and materialize and work through trauma.
I wasn’t the type of person who would ever do craft but here I am. It’s very easy to start actually. Here are some ideas you can steal, which are tired and tested:
1: Painted Boxes as Shelves
Do you have empty boxes lying around the house? I know I did! I bought some paint from the craft store and got my little ones to paint them. Then, we changed these boxes on the wall and used them as display shelves. My daughter painted her box yellow and displayed her toys there.
2: DIY Living Room Fort
Kids dig forts. It’s actually a nice way to kill time because once you are done building a fort, you can leave your kids to play games there all day.
Involve the whole family to create this cute little fort of yours. No need to disassemble it. Let it sit there so that they can come and play whenever they feel like it. To make it look more attractive, decorate it with fairy lights.
3: Sewing Cards
Have the kids not seen grandma in a while and they want to send her a card? Together, make sewing cards. Don’t worry, needles aren’t involved in this craft project.
All you have to do is punch holes in the paper and make any shape. Next, pass the string. This activity will keep your toddlers busy and they will love it too. These cards can also be made for holidays and birthdays. They are great for improving dexterity among kids.
4: DIY Earrings (Craft for Yourself)
Adults may get tired of kid’s crafts, which is exactly why they should have something for themselves. Invest in a DIY cork earring kit and create amazing jewelry pieces for yourself.
The kit includes corks in different shapes and sizes. All hardware is included in the kit so you won’t have to spend extra money. Do buy this kit because it also comes with gift bags and earring cards, which can be used for gifting
5: Popsicle Art
This is another easy craft that will keep your child occupied for a long time. You will need a bag of Popsicle sticks, glue, and, of course, paper. Let them unleash their creative side by making different art pieces with these sticks.
6: Window Drawing (Let Them Draw)
We all have one such who loves to draw, especially on the walls. Take the time at home as an opportunity to polish their drawing skills. Give them a bigger canvas i.e. the window.
You don’t have to worry as long as you are giving them a chalkboard marker instead of a permanent marker. It’s washable and is meant for drawing on the windows. Buy a chalkboard marker for your little one and let them unleash the artist within themselves. Make sure they know it’s washable and they are forbidden to use the marker on the walls or any place other than the windows.
Did you know you can also use acrylic paint on the window? Once it is dried, it scratches off easily. This can be a bit risky so I would stay stick to the chalkboard marker only.
7: Edible Lollipops
Okay, it’s not the type of craft I would recommend every other day because it involves sugar. But, kids will have fun making their own edible lollipops.
For this craft, all you need is edible flowers, jolly ranchers, and the good old Popsicle sticks.
