Choosing Between An Inpatient And Outpatient Drug And Alcohol Treatment Center

There is more than one kind of facility that helps people overcome addiction. Outpatient and residential drug treatment centers are the two categories that best describe these programs.

An inpatient program is a type of treatment that takes place in a facility where the patient is expected to spend all 24 hours of each day there.

In an outpatient program, the patient receives treatment during the day and then returns home in the evening.

Inpatient Treatment Center

The process of getting off of drugs or alcohol begins with the withdrawal phase. This occurs as a direct result of the patient not receiving their preferred medication and, as a consequence, beginning to experience withdrawal symptoms. Because experts are able to assist in monitoring the patient’s recovery throughout inpatient substance misuse programs, these programs play a crucial role in assisting patients in managing the symptoms of withdrawal. The primary goal of monitoring the patient is to reduce the risk that the withdrawal symptoms will become so severe that they endanger the patient’s life. The dosage of the patient’s drug of choice can be gradually decreased until the patient is able to function normally without the presence of the substance of choice in order to alleviate the symptoms of withdrawal.

In addition, there are pharmaceuticals that can be used to assist in the treatment of withdrawal symptoms caused by specific classes of narcotics. However, because severe addicts are typically hooked on more than one drug, the medical component of drug treatment can become even more difficult for them to go through. In order to be effective, these treatments need to be carried out inside a residential drug treatment facility. Methadone is one of the classic drugs used to alleviate withdrawal symptoms. Methadone is also one of the medications used to treat opioid addiction. Buprenorphine and naltrexone are two of the more recent treatment alternatives that have become available. These help to alleviate cravings for opioids while also reducing the severity of withdrawal symptoms.

Because the patient is monitored by a trained medical practitioner around the clock while participating in an inpatient drug addiction recovery program, the symptoms of withdrawal can be managed more effectively. Inpatient treatment requires the patient to live at the facility where they are receiving treatment for anywhere from one to three months at a time.

Outpatient Treatment Center

Recovery from a drug addiction that takes place in an outpatient setting involves several programs in which the patient receives treatment at a facility during the day and then returns home in the evening. The treatment typically involves some form of counseling, either on an individual basis or in a group setting, either of which can be either. Outpatient treatment typically consists of a variety of therapies, including the following:

  • Motivational incentives
  • CBT stands for cognitive behavior therapy.
  • Counseling for families with several perspectives
  • Interviewing for inspiration and motivation
