Floor Sanding – When Is It Time?

If your wooden floor is to stay nice for many years, it needs to be sanded at regular intervals. But how do you know when it’s time for a floor sanding?

A worn wood floor can take the nerve out of any decor and if your wood floor has gotten there, it’s definitely time for a Gulvafslibning- and possibly a floor planing.

But maybe you should have put in a little earlier?

It is relatively simple to have a professional floor sanding done, and if you do it in time, you will never find that the floor lacks life. On the contrary, it will stay beautiful and glowing through all the years.

Can you settle for a new finish?

First, look at the floor finish; is it lacquered, oiled or soaped? If it is varnished, you cannot repair it with a new treatment, but if it is oiled or soaped, there is a good chance that you can treat it again so that the wood gets its old life back.

Before reprocessing, clean the floor with wood cleaner, and then follow the supplier’s instructions on the product you have selected for the floor.

If you are not much for throwing yourself over the work yourself, we are of course happy to help.

When the floor needs a floor sanding

New surface treatment is only an option if the floor is oiled or soaped and it does not remove dark stains or scratches in the floor.

If your wooden floor with the veins has been filled with marks, dark markings after spilled liquid and small scratches here and there, then it’s time for a floor sanding . A professional floor sanding removes not only the aforementioned, but also the old surface treatment, so that the floor can be re-treated.

When the floor still needs to be sanded, you can consider whether you were happy with the look in the past – alternatively, you can try a new finishing. In this post you can read more about the different options for finishing.

Have you taken over a much worn wooden floor?

It is not always that a floor sanding is enough. If you have just taken over a home with an old wooden floor that is filled with paint and glue residues or if the old floor has been treated with varnish, you will not get far with a floor sanding.

A floor planing is stronger and removes more of the floor surface than a floor sanding, and therefore it is also a solution that you only need in particularly harsh cases. But the opportunity is there, and that means that the vast majority of wooden floors can be saved – even if the condition is really bad.

Only sand the floor when necessary

The prices of floor sanding today are extremely friendly, and therefore it is tempting to get it done as soon as the first scratches appear. But it is important that the floor is not sanded more often than absolutely necessary.

There are limits to how many times you can sand a wooden floor.

If you have slatted floors, the wear layer is only 2-12 mm thick, and it can only be sanded 1-2 times before the wood itself has been sanded away. If you have solid planks, it is a completely different matter, but nevertheless it is a good idea to be careful so that future generations can also enjoy the beautiful floor.
