Taking screenshots in Windows 11 is getting better, with more options. Microsoft has updated the clunky old Snipping Tool (available by pressing Windows Key-Shift-S), which competes with the similarly named and superior Snip & Sketch app.

You can use the Snipping Tool to select rectangular or freehand areas, programme windows, or the entire desktop. It then launches a mini-editor for cropping and annotation. 

The screenshot tool also includes a delay timer and saving and sharing options. To save a screen image file to the clipboard or OneDrive, you can still use the tried-and-true PrtSc key.

Snap Layouts for a Clean Desktop

Windows has always allowed you to arrange windows on the desktop exactly how you want them. 

Just when I thought it was impossible to improve on Windows 10’s already excellent capabilities—which allow you to snap a window to the side to fill exactly half the screen or to a corner to fill exactly a quarter of the screen real estate—Microsoft introduces Snap Layouts. 

When you hover your mouse over the maximise icon at the top right of any window, you’ll see a thumbnail view with multiple layout options. You can even save a layout for a group of apps in a single taskbar icon to reuse later.
