Google introduces a bigger, retro typeface – a mix of Serif and Roboto

Google has introduced a new version of its Roboto font and is bringing Serif back with the Roboto Serif.

The latest font was designed in collaboration with Greg Gazdowicz of Commercial Type to create an improved version of the Roboto Sans font.

The new font features newly drawn letters that are “reminiscent of Roboto, but have a new and original design,” as highlighted by Google UX manager Rob Giampietro. The new font still uses the same vertical proportions of the Roboto Sans – blending the serif and sans serif in one design.

Serif fonts are known for their simplicity and are easier to read with clear letter shapes. Google’s latest font expands on the merit of being a variable font that can be optimized for screens of different sizes.

Vox notes that coarser, retro-style serif fonts will soon be back in style with a bang after years of minimalist sans serif domination.

Google has been using the Roboto font for over ten years now. The font was first introduced with Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) as the default font. Since then, Roboto has seen multiple variants.

However, Google’s primary font Product Sans has been steadily adopting Roboto in several products.

Currently, the company only plans to add Roboto Serif to Google Fonts as just another variant of Roboto’s open-source font family.
