Sympathy Gift Etiquette: What is Appropriate to Send to Someone Grieving

One of the hardest things to do when someone you care about is grieving is knowing what to say or do. Understandably, you want to make them feel better, but you often don’t know how. Not wanting to say or do the wrong thing and make the situation worse is even more difficult. When giving sympathy gifts, here’re things to remember.

Send an Appropriate Gift

Make sure the gift is appropriate for your relationship with the grieving person. A close friend or family member will likely appreciate a more personal gift than a casual acquaintance. As you will realize, flowers for expressing condolence vary in type and color. Go for red, white, or yellow flowers if you’re close to the grieving person. If you barely know them, it’s best to stick with a more generic arrangement.

Choose a Meaningful Gift

Your gift should be meaningful, not just something you picked up on the way to the funeral. If you’re unsure what the grieving person would like, ask a close friend or family member for suggestions. Avoid giving something that will just end up collecting dust on a shelf.

If you want them to know you’re thinking about them and their loss, send a sympathy card instead. Go for flowers such as the Peace Lily, which represent rebirth and new beginnings. They’re a thoughtful option because they express your condolences while giving the grieving person hope for new beginnings.

Don’t Overdo It

When it comes to sympathy gifts, less is usually more. A simple gift is often more appreciated than an extravagant one. The focus should be on your gesture of support and condolence, not the gift itself.

For instance, consider a food basket with the person’s favorite snacks and drinks rather than an expensive piece of jewelry. Also, avoid anything interpreted as being too personal, such as clothing or a photo frame.

When sending flowers, it’s usually best to go with a small arrangement. A large bouquet may be overwhelming, especially if the person already has flowers from other well-wishers. Even a single blossom, such as a rose, is a thoughtful way to express your condolences.

Send Your Gift At The Right Time

Time is a critical factor when sending a sympathy gift. Generally, it’s best to send it soon after the death, preferably within the first week. It shows that you’re thinking of the person during that critical time of grief.

They will feel more supported, which helps the healing process. If you cannot send the gift right away, don’t worry. Just send it as soon as possible but attach a note explaining the delay.

Give the Gift in Person If Possible

If you’re close to the grieving person, giving the gift in person is best. This way, you’ll offer your condolences and support in person. Taking the time to do it even if you live far away will also be appreciated.

If you can’t be there in person, have the gift delivered to their home or workplace. Better still, request a close friend to deliver and include a note with your message of support.

They Will Appreciate The Effort

Sympathy gifts are a thoughtful way to show your support for someone who is grieving. Just be sure to follow the proper etiquette, so you don’t worsen the situation. The person will appreciate your thoughtfulness, no matter what you give.
