What is the best battery for automatic start-stop systems?

The energy consumption of modern vehicles is increasing, and the growing number of electronic components and comfort systems puts more strain on the battery. Furthermore, legal requirements to reduce CO2 emissions force manufacturers to implement automatic start-stop systems.

Only high performance automotive batteries, such as EFB or AGM batteries, can meet these increased demands and provide the vehicle with stable power. Only the same type of battery can be used to replace the Start-Stop Battery. An AGM battery upgrade may be recommended in the case of an EFB battery. However, in some cases, an AGM battery may be suitable for vehicles lacking start-stop technology.

Our partner workshops can quickly find the right battery on the VARTA partner portal. Our end users will benefit from the VARTA battery search as well.

We’ve summarized the various battery technologies and suitable replacement batteries below, as well as explained why an upgrade might be worthwhile.

Battery technology for automobiles

Standard starting batteries

Conventional lead-acid batteries have been used in millions of vehicles for decades. Nowadays, almost all batteries are maintenance-free. There is no other maintenance required besides a regular check in your workshop to detect imminent failure. If the old battery does not require service, only qualified personnel should service it.

Lead-acid batteries, with proper care, can last for many years and are still widely used in vehicles with no start-stop systems and few electrical components.

Batteries for EFBs

EFB batteries are more powerful versions of traditional starter batteries.

They can be used more efficiently now that they are surrounded by a polyester mesh and have a better active material composition. When compared to a conventional battery, it also results in a slower increase in internal resistance over its lifetime. EFB batteries are commonly used in vehicles with entry-level start-stop systems, which typically do not include brake energy regeneration.

GEL batteries

AGM batteries are well-known for their high performance and long lifespan. The glass fibre mat used as a separator in an AGM battery absorbs the electrolyte, making it impossible for the electrolyte to leak from the battery. The AGM battery plates are compressed during installation. This ensures an optimal connection between the acid and the plates throughout the battery’s life. Furthermore, the compression prevents active material loss and makes the battery particularly reliable for demanding applications.

AGM batteries are used in vehicles that have advanced automatic start-stop systems and braking energy recovery.

Only use an EFB or AGM battery to replace the EFB battery.

AGM or EFB starter batteries are designed for vehicles with start-stop systems. Traditional car batteries cannot withstand the high demands of being discharged during stops. When a regular battery is used instead of an AGM or EFB battery, the battery deteriorates quickly and fails. Use a battery that is compatible with your vehicle’s battery management system for optimal performance. The EFB battery can be replaced with an AGM battery, increasing the efficiency of the automatic start-stop system and improving fuel efficiency.

AGM batteries are required for vehicles with AGM batteries.

Vehicles with automatic start-stop systems and energy recovery put a lot of strain on the battery. The AGM battery is also suitable for regenerative braking energy charging and can withstand a large number of cycles caused by the automatic start-stop system.

AGM batteries quench your energy thirst.

Modern compact and mid-size cars are frequently outfitted with a slew of electronic aids and convenience features, such as heated seats or mirrors. Furthermore, components such as navigation systems and central locking are frequently standard equipment even in small cars. Premium vehicles, SUVs, and sports cars have even more electrical components that a battery must provide in all driving conditions and weathers. In such cases, switching to an AGM battery, even if the vehicle lacks auto start-stop technology, may be worthwhile to increase reliability.
