Understanding UPF Ratings

Sun protection fishing shirts have only recently begun to catch on with freshwater anglers, even though they’ve been popular in saltwater fishing for more than 10 years. Several million sun protection fishing shirts are sold every year. And yet, this important angler item and the UPF rating associated with fishing shirts remains widely misunderstood.

UPF stands for Ultraviolet Protection Factor. It is a measurement of ultraviolet light that reaches your skin when wearing a particular garment.  UPF ratings were created in Australia in 1996 following studies by several Australian swimwear companies. When the shirt is woven or knitted it leaves small holes with no fabric to shade your skin from the sun, easily visible with a microscope. A UPF rating of 25 means that 1/25th or 4% of the sun’s rays will reach your skin. Said another way, 96% of the sun’s rays will be blocked.  A UPF rating of 50 means that 1/50th or 2% of the sun’s rays will reach your skin with 98% of them blocked.

A UPF rating of 50+ is the highest possible and provides excellent protection from the sun. To achieve a UPF 50+ rating, the fabric must go through independent laboratory testing. The results are then given as a UPF rating. The two main ways to increase a fabric’s UPF rating are either by using denser/heavier fabrics or by adding chemicals to the yarn during the knitting process (these are generally referred to as UV absorbers). Heavier weight fabrics offer better sun protection because there is less skin exposed to the sun’s rays. A good example of this would be comparing a T-shirt to a long-sleeved shirt – the long-sleeved shirt will provide

better sun protection as it covers more skin. The problem with using heavier-weight fabrics to increase UPF ratings is that they are often less comfortable to wear in hot weather as they don’t breathe as well. This is where UV absorbers come in handy as they can be used in lighter-weight fabrics to make them more protective without sacrificing breathability. The most important thing to remember when choosing a sun-protection fishing shirt is to make sure it has been independently tested and carries a valid UPF rating.

Fabrication is More Important Than Fabric

Different fabrics do provide some sun protection advantages, but the real difference maker in a sun protection fishing shirt is the fabrication and the size of the microscopic space between the threads. In addition, factors that affect the size of that space and therefore the sun protection of the fishing shirt include weight or diameter of the thread, stretch, and even color.  A darker color will typically provide better sun protection because the die in the thread helps expand the diameter of the thread and therefore reduce the size of the microscopic holes between the threads. The tradeoff is that darker colors tend to trap more heat than lighter colors so the slight advantage you gain in sun protection may be overcome by not being as cool in a darker shirt.

Lightweight, Breathable Sun Protection Shirts are Ideal for Hot Weather Fishing

The ideal sun protection fishing shirt is one that is lightweight, breathable and has a UPF rating of 50+. This type of shirt will help keep you cool and protected from the sun’s harmful rays. When choosing a fishing shirt, look for ones that are made with fabrics such as polyester or nylon and have a tight weave. Avoid shirts made with cotton or linen as they provide little to no sun protection. In addition, be sure to choose a shirt that is comfortable and allows you to move freely. Remember, the best fishing apparel is the one you’ll actually want to wear.

Sun Protection On The Water

Sun protection while fishing is far more important than with many other outdoor activities. That’s because whether you are out on the deck of a big game fishing boat or on your bass boat at your local lake, it’s difficult to keep out of the sun. Also, the common denominator in all fishing environments is water. Water reflects the sun’s rays, so you are bombarded not only directly by the sun, but off the water as well.

For this reason, it’s important to choose a sun protection fishing shirt that will keep you cool and protected from the sun. When to Wear a Sun Protection Fishing ShirtA sun protection fishing shirt is an essential piece of fishing gear and should be worn anytime you are going to be exposed to direct sunlight for extended periods of time. This includes when you are fishing from the bank, wading in a stream or river, or out on a boat. In addition, always remember to apply sunscreen to any exposed skin – even if you are wearing a sun protection fishing shirt. The shirt will help protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays, but it won’t provide 100% coverage so it’s important to use sunscreen as well.
